The term ChemClust stands literally for "Improving Innovation in European Chemical Clusters". It describes a Regional Initiative Project in INTERREG IVC Programme of the European Union. As part of the Priority 1 "Innovation and the Knowledge Economy" the project will contribute by it´s sub-theme "Innovation, research and technology development". The ChemClust project represents an initiative of the European Chemical Regions Network (ECRN). ECRN itself has been created as a result of successful implementing a project of INTERREG III C from 2004 to 2007. The membership based association of so far 20 (of former 13) chemical regions is recognised now as a stakeholder at EU level by the European Commission. Further ECRN is the first ever network of regions which was introduced in the High Level Dialogue on the Competitiveness of the Chemicals Industry in the European Union launched in 2007. Now the project ChemClust is committed to the recommendations oft the High Level Group for increased cooperation in chemical clusters throughout Europe in the area of innovation support as major factor for increased competitiveness of chemical industry in Europe.

The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC , financed by the European Union's Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention . EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.
